More than two thirds of Europeans live in towns or cities. Their health and well-being depend on how successfully city authorities address the environmental challenges that affect their daily lives. The European Green Capital and European Green Leaf Awards recognize the important role of cities as drivers of sustainable development and reward cities for their commitment to improving their urban environment.
On the 20 June 2019, NILU will be part of the Award Ceremony announcing the winners of the prestigious 2021 European Green Capital and 2020 European Green Leaf Awards.
In addition to the Award ceremony we will participate in the symposium ‘Youth demand action now. What can cities and businesses do?’. In order to combat the adverse effects of climate change and to protect the environment, fast change is needed and bold changes need to be made. Next generations are demanding change in climate governance in order to combat the adverse effects of climate change before time runs out.
How can cities and businesses take action? In the symposium we will involve politicians, youth, experts and business leaders in discussions on how we can answer the challenge. The symposium will be officially opened by Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and Raymond Johansen, Governing Mayor of Oslo.
