2019-06-20. There is increasing evidence that radioactive particles from radon and the pollution of ambient air has an adverse effect on human health. At the same time, even though that recent advancements in the field of sensing technologies enable the deployment of numerous low-cost sensors, there are many research question to still be answered. Those relate to at least: the choice of sensors and other components, the quality of measures, strategies for deployment and calibration, means for exchange of data, standards for hardware and software components, strategies for engagement of citizens. Different groups at European Commission’s Joint Research Center (JRC) are addressing those questions from a different angle. And we see a great possibility to join forces.
Within this context, the JRC citizen science and air quality teams taking advantage of the newly established JRC Makerspace (#JRCmakerspace) and of the activities of the ECSA working group on air quality, in order to bring various already existing expertise under a single roof.
We will use the results of the recently concluded AirSensEUR “Proof of Concept” open hardware/software/data platform  as a common denominator for the discussion. We will be assembling AirSensEUR units with the idea to discuss the implications and possibilities for deployment and reuse of the currently existing prototypes. With this activity we hope to prepare future collaborations and new deployments of already available open sensor systems
